Camera on computer turns on without logging in?

The pre-installed camera on my macbook sometimes turns on before I log on or use an application that requires it. I’m wondering if a third party is controlling my macbook and spying on me with the camera. Could that be a possibility?

Video capture with webcams usually takes more systems resources than an idle computer. I’m not very familiar with macs, but I suggest getting a process/resource monitoring tool, and check the CPU usage when the webcam light is ON. If you notice that the computer is working a bit more than when the light is off, there is a good chance that webcam is recording/transmitting.
